Project Evaluation

Project evaluation

  1. What was the project? Give brief description: aims

The project we were set to do was to reinterpret the shirt/ blouse for the modern fashion boutique market, it must be wearable and will be made out of a cotton material. We got given a bright red bit of material- this is going to be in the end what the garment will be made out of. So the project was to make a fashionable statement shirt which would appeal to many different markets.

  1. What did you have to do to fulfil the brief?

To fulfil the shirt project brief I had to do many different tasks to make sure I was aiming for the right grade and overall outcome on the project. What I had to do was create a shirt influenced sketch book with different ideas, influences and project plans which would overall help me figure out how and what to do when I create my final shirt. I also had to do risk assessments for each different machine or tool I was going to use, I had to brainstorm different ideas, influences, designers, historical, art and architecture. I then had to do a lot of different research on shirts, their fastenings, different styles, whether they are contemporary or old fashioned style.  When the background information was laid out in my sketch book using what I had put into the sketch book I had to create 25 shirt designs. Once I had done this I had to choose which shirt was my favourite, I couldn’t choose one straight on the spot so I chose two main ones and developed these shirts into different shapes, fastenings and layouts I did this part of the task in my layout pad so overall there would be 60 design developments that total amounted included back and front drawings. Once that part was complete I had to create a mood and research board based on exactly what I believed helped me create my final shirt design. I collected sources of both primary and secondary research to help me create my final boards. I then had to create a final design board which consisted of a fished fashion illustration styling the shirt I am going to create and the two front and back working drawings of my shirt.

3. How did you approach the subject? Explain your working method.

Firstly I started of by collecting lots of images which I would perhaps want to use for my final design, such as collars, cuffs and different overall shirt styles, I then looked into designers then art work. When I am set something to do I like to just do it otherwise it all gets too much for me to handle if I leave it so when I was doing my research is something sprung to mind I would write it down then research into it. Once I started doing the illustrations with my shirt designs on in my shirt sketch book I then kind of realised how hard it was to simply get the hang of creating something that I will have to make, I know on the brief it said you can do outrageous designs, so I did a few but then I had to simplify them down so I would actually be able to create that specific shirt.

4. What different types of media, materials and techniques did you use?

I used different types of media, I used photos from the internet, I used another source of primary research so photos which I had took my self especially from the section in the scenery part, all the photos from this section are took by me. Some people may ask how this influenced me but it was the toning of the colour and the shaping of the trees. Also different types of materials helped me realise how the material we have been chosen to use is perfect for a first shirt. I have never made clothes before this unit so I am really excited to see how it goes, whether I learn from my mistakes and make it better so everything fits together right.

5. How does your final piece/outcome meet the brief?

Well the brief states it must be modern, when I was designing in my sketch book I did a big piece on avant-garde style fashion which I absolutely adore! This particular style of fashion is just amazing; it stands out and makes people go wow! But what I had to think about was how many people in general knower days that applies too. Also I don’t have the wide range of skills yet to create something as outrageous as a avant-garde inspired piece of fashion. The shirt sleeves are really large and padded along the shoulder part. But it includes doing lots of focused darts, so I settled for a floated sleeve which comes in at the bottom to make a buttoned cuff. Although now I kind of know the style I really like, it sounds crazy but I hadn’t really heard about avant-garde fashion until I wrote about it in my sketch book but I absolutely love it. I believe my shirt does fit the brief, its stylish, wearable on a day or even evening wear. It is a fashionable statement I just hope it turns out great when I actually make it.

6. What are the strengths of the work you have produced and why?

I think the strengths of my work are my research I used an extensive amount to really make a point in where I wanted to go with the project. I felt I covered every aspect of different influences which I could possibly think of. I didn’t do about animals, although different creatures such as butterflies are inspiring I didn’t want to do a great focus on that particular subject part. I feel like I have really learnt a lot, I would never have thought sculpture work would have made such an impact on me that it did. Going to the Yorkshire Sculpture Park really did help; I absolutely loved the two visits we made. So definitely I hope the research is a good strength of the project. Also I loved doing the designing part and drawing the fashion illustrations.

7. What are the weaknesses of the work you have produced?
How might this be improved?

Firstly when I started using Photoshop I just couldn’t get the hang of it at all, the tools on the program and compositionally I just couldn’t get it. So my testers are weak but I believe in the end when I have made my mood and research boards they have surprisingly turned out good I was pleased with the images I chose to use and the colour saturation I chose to flow through each board. Now I got the hang of it I think the weakness I initially had has gone but that’s just with practise. Also just getting to be more free with my drawings when I am doing design ideas, I have realised they don’t need to be perfect the whole point of them is for a trail and error purpose so doing them in perfect lines isn’t going to help when I want to go back and change the way something is.

8. Which part of the project did you find easy/liked most and why?

I thought the part of the project where we had to get all of our information was the simplest part for me, although it took a while to get the hang of what and which designers, objects etc were actually my inspirations, once I had figured this part out I loved doing the sketch book putting each element in the right place and working on the book until I got it exactly how I had pictured it in my head. Although throughout the project I did have to keep going back into the sketch book with adding and taking away different parts in the end I was really happy with the research part. I also really liked drawing the illustrations it was something I was really looking forward to doing, I cant wait until I have fully got the hang of my personalised illustration so it is completely different compared to anyone else’s.

9. Which part of the project did you find difficult/liked least and why?

The part of the project which I found the most difficult was coming up with so many different shirts when designing I felt in the end they were beginning to get repetitive which was something I really didn’t want to happen. I used all my different influences to create different ideas. But I found I was focusing a lot on the shoulder feature rather than the fit, cuffs, buttons etc, I think in the next project I do I will be able to create lots of different new ideas, each individual one more creative than the other. Now I have that experience of developing one garment I will be able to create more detailed, creative pieces.

10. What skills have you gained?

I have gained a lot of skills during this project, firstly doing all my samples on the sewing machine so I was learning all the different techniques, I have learnt about the manufacture and structure of making garments and how to incorporate different mechanisms in design work to help make folds, gathers etc for a sleeve. I have slowly but surely learnt about the key skills and technique of Photoshop to put together different images for a project like I have done with the shirt one with my mood and research board. Also just simple things like working drawings and how important the accuracy of them are.

11. What would you do differently to improve your project?

I would certainly look a lot more into every single different feature of a shirt and how it is made then I could use this skill in knowing exactly how that feature would sit on the bodice of my shirt. Also having a much wider range of design ideas, but overall I am happy with how this project has gone.

12. Could the brief have been improved and if so how?

I think the brief is really flexible for a first project, in a way where you can’t particularly go wrong in the sense of what you are designing. As the brief states it has to be for a high fashion market so as long as you keep what you designing simple yet effective you can really go in any direction with what you have been given from the brief. If there was a particular element in the brief which every student had to go by everyone’s end product would have a similar feel about them, that is not what this shirt project is about, its about difference. Not one persons work in the class is similar in the slightest and that’s how the brief is great.

13. Conclusion - sum up your feelings about the project and the end result.

In conclusion I have really enjoyed doing the shirt project I just can’t wait to start making the actually garment now and seeing how all the different skills I have learnt come together. Obviously there are things which I would maybe change but I am happy with the research and ideas I have come up with and the final design I have got. I love the whole designing and collecting background knowledge of the project and brief I have got, although I found things hard I think I have used this to make the end result better.
